At Salena Estate, we firmly believe in the old winemaker’s maxim that ‘the making of good wine starts in the vineyard’. To achieve consistently high quality fruit, the latest pruning, canopy management and other vineyard practises are undertaken to ensure the best possible varietal expression in the harvest.
Our vineyard plantings are of fairly significant size, at 208 hectares (520 acres). Varieties grown include Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot, Chardonnay, Colombard, Semillon and Riesling.
In line with world-wide trends, the company endeavours to utilise a ‘minimalist intervention’ approach to weed and pest control. In fact, such is our commitment to this philosophy, that we are converting our vineyard management regimes to totally organic practices.
With every facet of the vineyard operations dedicated to the production of premium fruit, the culmination of the season’s work sees harvest conducted by machine in the cool of the morning, when the grapes are in peak condition.
The harvest is then transferred to the modern winery, just minutes away on the same property, where crushing and processing are quickly commenced.
