Vintage Update

2018 vintage has arrived and we are in the full swing of it.

After a rather sporadic start due to some interesting weather which included November rains, a spike in temperature and the current humidity, our vines have been working hard. Fruit varieties have been maturing at different rates, meaning our viticulturists have been getting little sleep as they keep on top of everything. While some of the vineyards lost some foliage from the warmth, the grapes were working overtime to create the ideal Baume. While crop yields are slightly down from last year, quality is up which has created a lot of buzz around the winery for a great vintage ahead.

Speaking of vintage, have you met our new winemaker this year? He does so much of the hard work so we can sit down and enjoy a lovely glass, or two, of wine.

Grant Semmens

Grant has returned to Salena Estate after working with us back in 1998 for 5 years. He recently spent some time in the Limestone Coast and brings with him 26 years of experience.

In my beautiful balloon, well in this case a Boeing A380.

2018 has gotten off to a flying start, literally. With several international trade shows already under our belt it's safe to say we’re still recovering from some jet lag.

January started in freezing London for the first leg of the Australia Day Tasting hosted by Wine Australia. We then went on to Edinburgh and Dublin where the competition heated up and the temperature cooled down. This was a very successful show as we were awarded a spot in the top 50 wines for our Twisted Sticks 2015 Organic Cabernet Sauvignon in the official tasting held before the show began. People flocked to our stand to try this wine and the other organics in the Twisted Sticks range.

After our fingers and toes defrosted, just a little, we set our sights on South Korea, a two-day Food and Beverage Showcase held in Seoul hosted by Austrade.  A first time for us in South Korea, it was a great experience with plenty of chances to network and get our product across to interested buyers.

There is no rest for the wicked as we headed straight to Dusseldorf, Germany for ProWein, the biggest international wine show with over 6,500 exhibiters and nearly 60,000 visitors. Three long days of meetings, with a few parties thrown into the mix, made the time fly by with plenty of leads to keep us busy with follow up, and maybe a small hangover.

While the rest of us were rugging up in Germany, a select lucky few set off to Chengdu where the layers came off and the humidity turned on. The largest Asian wine fair is divided up into 2 section, the Hotel Fair and the Main fair. With Salena Estate stands scattered between them, we had to work hard to keep up with the amount of people.

We finally touched down back home to find Mad March was over and the people of Adelaide had gone back into hibernation.

Adelaide Cellar Door First Birthday

Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to…well to us actually, WERE ONE YEAR OLD!

Let us take a look back on the exciting year…

We had old friends find us again that used to visit us at our old cellar door in Campbelltown, we were really happy to see them again. They were excited to see new brands and varieties of wine. We also made plenty of new friends by people popping in to say hello, because who doesn’t love some free wine tasting!

Our Cellar Door team started at one with Wayne our Cellar Door Manager, and then expanded to include Tyrone, Nick and Patrick.  We said goodbye to Patrick at the beginning of 2018 as he left to follow his dreams of becoming a real estate agent, but he loved us so much he only works just down the road. We have recently taken on two more awesome team members in training so pop in to meet James and Angus.

We participated in local shows such as the 2017 Cellar Door Fest, Taste of Glynde, 4WD Adventure Show, Norwood Tour Down Under Street Party, the Norwood Payneham St Peters Council Growth Series, Home Ground’s Friday’s at 5pm, Chinatown’s Lunar New Year Street Party and 2018 Cellar Door Fest.

We hosted a big opening party, the Payneham Road Precinct Networking Drinks as well as several private events, with several more already booked in for this year.

We brought back our famous Mediterranean platters (which were so popular at our previous cellar door); these are available exclusively on Groupon, so get in quick, as there are only limited spots available.

For those that haven’t stopped by to check us out, come find us at 83 Payneham Road, St Peters.
